they must have a regular eye check
up to see their compliance and any
abnormalities associated with the contact lens wear is detected.
The
contact lens practitioners are expected to help tackle this
issue by
explaining this to their client before contact lens wear and
during follow-
up visits on top of the standard consultation such as the basic
care regime.
1.3. Over the years since the inception of the Optical Act
1991, there have
been quite a number of bogus optometry practitioners who are
not
qualified to practice thus unregistered with the Malaysian
Optical Council
practicing illegally in Malaysia. Several attempts by the
Ministry through
the surprise check- up method to curb this illegal practice
have not been
fruitful. There are currently 529 registered optometrists
and 2132
registered opticians practicing optometry in Malaysia whereby
140 out of
registered optometrist works in public hospitals. Statistics
from the MOC
also shows that the ratio of the public and private optometry
practitioner is
one to 9,819 populations and on par with the recommended world
norms
which is one to every ten thousand population. It is hope
by introducing
this latest initiative on top of the regular enforcement activity;
the public
will get the most benefits.
