new measure
would like to tackle the lack of awareness from the public
especially the
contact lens wearer. It is hope that by introducing this Photo
Name
Certificate, the contact lens wearer would be given the opportunity
to
choose from various registered contact lens practitioners
therefore
commanding a self-regulation. To date there are 531 registered
opticians
who are given the permit to practice contact lenses on top
of the registered
optometrists in Malaysia. The public are not aware of the
true situation
whereby they should only buy the contact lenses from the registered
contact lens practitioners because this group are not only
qualified, but
have the necessary and sufficient expertise in determining
the right and
suitable contact lenses for public use. Besides, this group
has at least the
sufficient knowledge with the basic equipments in examining
the cornea
and to further probe the compatibility of the eye prior to
contact lens wear.
1.2. According to the recently published article in newspapers
regarding the
increase cases of fungal keratitis comeal infection related
to the contact
lens solution. The Ministry of Health through this initiative
would be able
to tackle this issue which highlights the first and foremost
important fact
regarding contact lens wear thus expectantly change the mindset
of the
public. The contact lens wearer not only should buy from the
approved
contact lens practitioners, but should have gone through a
comprehensive
eye examination before and after wearing the contact lens.
