3. ISSUES
Malaysian Optical Council through its 39th meeting on 24
June 2005 has made an
administrative measure to curb the non-ethical practice of
optometry in the optical
industry through the implementation of the Photo Name Certificate.
With this new
measure, it is hope that the public will be aware of not only
the bogus practitioners,
but the scope of practice of each and every one of the registered
private optometry
practitioner with a valid annual practicing license. These
new initiatives will also in
due course address certain issues beleaguered the public as
stated below.
Recently, Minister of Health has met the public through few
sessions such as meeting
with the representatives of the optometry associations in
the country whereby certain
issues have been highlighted. The public through various channels
have raised their
concern while the situation from the public and the private
hospitals has also been
monitored by the Ministry. These are the few issues that have
been highlighted:
1.1. According to the statistics from the Ophthalmology Department
of the
Selayang Hospital and the Tun Hussein Onn National Eye Hospital,
